OUR STORY

Our story begins with a Swedish immigrant named Fred G. Anderson. The founder of Fred G. Anderson Wallpaper and Paint started a small paint retail store in 1948. Fred’s first store was at 50th and Washburn in Minneapolis in 1948.

Enter my grandfather. Robert was a high school student who went to work washing paint buckets in the basement of Fred’s first retail location. As he spent his time around skilled tradesmen, his experience and interest in the painting trades grew.

Soon after graduation, like many men of his generation, Robert enlisted in the military and spent eight years serving across the United States in the US Army. While traveling around, he realized his passion was for painting and decorating.

When his Army service was complete, he returned to Minneapolis and went back to work with his mentors Fred Anderson and Harold Norby.

As Fred was growing his retail sales business, he entrusted my grandfather to grow the paint contracting division. After a few years of managing, Robert had the opportunity to take over and spin off the contracting business into an independent company.

Robert moved his family to Eden Prairie, MN, and ran his business out of his house and an old horse hay barn.

In 1953, he changed the name to RGM Painting and started by managing all of Fred G. Anderson’s former residential and commercial customers. One of those customers was a man named Gil Braun. Gil would later become the founder of Braun’s Fashions (most recently known as Christopher and Banks).

As their friendship grew and Gil pursued his dream of creating his own fashion brand, Robert was there to help transform things into reality by helping open the first Braun’s location in the Miracle Mile in St. Louis Park, MN. Braun’s (“Styles of the Mile”) store sold apparel for girls 7 to 14, sub-teens, and women.

This was the beginning of PMR’s retail journey.

Through the years, as Braun’s grew and construction needs grew, Robert helped transform Braun’s into a national brand. While the main business remained focused on residential and commercial paint, the demand for full construction services became clear.

In 1985, my father, Thomas, took over from my grandfather. He continued to grow the commercial paint division of RGM Painting and supported the rapid retail growth across the United States.

As a new generation of RGM Painting took over, a new era of retail began. The 1980s and 1990s were a boon for retail and shopping centers and with that, Tom grew our retail services division. Serving brands like Red Owl, SUPERVALU, Kohl’s, and Dayton’s (Target), our industry knowledge and team of skilled tradesmen grew.

In this era, most retailers had their own in-house project management staff but leaned heavily on reliable contractors to solve new store remodeling and facility needs. Tom saw the importance of embedding within the facilities and construction department, becoming an extension of their team.

The 2000’s challenges and opportunities began the story of PMR’s third generation of leadership. As the Global War on terrorism began and the global economy worsened, my father’s resilience allowed his business to push through the toughest times. It was a true testament to the relationships he forged with his customers and his employees.

As a family business, the knack for construction was instilled in me as a child. Being brought to job sites and spending time with skilled tradesmen, it was clear that my interest in construction trades wouldn’t fade. I graduated high school and immediately joined the military while simultaneously going to college and working with my father. Service was at my core.

With a service mindset, I could fuse my passions and shape the direction of PMR. Our long history of retail construction and our growing focus on service to other service providers and fellow government agencies began PMR’s journey into a nationwide construction and facilities manager, serving everyone from start-up brands to international retailers with thousands of locations.

Today, we are still family-owned and operated. The tradition continues, and we remain Veteran-owned and operated with our guiding principle of service before self.
